Convert your Computer into a Child’s Activity Center!

Do you have a small child or baby that likes to bang on your keyboard? Small children just love to press all those buttons! But, you certainly don’t want your child editing your email or spreadsheets.

BabyType is a Windows-based application that converts your computer into an Activity Center for your child. Specifically, BabyType allows your child to safely play on the computer without the possibility of getting into any other program or data on your computer. (The only way to exit the program is by using the mouse.)

BabyType rewards your child every time a key is pressed on the keyboard. In particular, a sound effect is played on the computer’s speakers, and a visual effect is displayed on the screen. Every key produces a unique sound and visual effect.

BabyType has 5 Play Modes:

  • ClassicType
  • PatternType
  • ShapeType
  • PictureType
  • KeyType

ClassicType

When BabyType is in the ClassicType play mode, the following things happen when your child presses a key on the keyboard:

  • A sound effect is played on your computer’s speakers. For example, a dog barking.
  • A particular key always produces the same sound effect.
  • A random shape is displayed on the screen.
  • The shape is filled with a random color. There are 214 possible colors.

PatternType

PatternType is very similar to ClassicType. However, rather than fill the shape with a random color, the shape is filled with a pattern. When BabyType is in the PatternType play mode, the following things happen when your child presses a key on the keyboard:

  • A sound effect is played on your computer’s speakers. For example, a dog barking.
  • A particular key always produces the same sound effect.
  • A random shape is displayed on the screen.
  • The shape is filled with a pattern, instead of a solid color. The pattern used to fill the shape when a particular key is pressed is always the same.

ShapeType

The third play mode in BabyType is ShapeType, which differs from ClassicType and PatternType in that a particular key will always generate the same shape and fill it with the same color. When BabyType is in the ShapeType play mode, the following things happen when your child presses a key on the keyboard:

  • A sound effect is played on your computer’s speakers. For example, a dog barking.
  • A shape is displayed on the screen. The shape displayed when a particular key is pressed is always the same. There are 14 possible shapes (circle, oval, triangle, right triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, diamond, pentagon, hexagon, arrow, octagon, star, and cross).
  • All shapes are the same size.
  • The shape is filled with a color. The shape displayed when a particular key is pressed is always filled with the same color. For example, the Space Bar always displays a maroon star.

PictureType

The PictureType play mode unifies the sound effects that are played on the speakers and the visual effects that are displayed on the screen. When BabyType is in the PictureType play mode, the following things happen when your child presses a key on the keyboard:

  • A sound effect is played on your computer’s speakers. For example, a dog barking.
  • A picture is displayed on the screen. The picture corresponds to the sound effect. For example, for the dog barking sound effect, a picture of a dog is displayed.
  • The picture is displayed in three possible sizes (small, medium, and large).

KeyType

The KeyType play mode is similar to PictureType in that it unifies the sound effects that are played on the speakers and the visual effects that are displayed on the screen. However, KeyType is different because the sound heard when a key is pressed is a small child saying the name of the key. When BabyType is in the KeyType play mode, the following things happen when your child presses a key on the keyboard:

  • Your child hears another small child say the name of the key over the speakers.
  • The key that was pressed is displayed on the screen. For example, if your child presses the “A” key, then A will appear on the screen. If your child presses the “Enter” key, then Enter will appear on the screen.
  • The name of the key is displayed in a random font and color.
